Overview: Step onto another planet. The Danakil Depression is one of the lowest, hottest, and most visually striking places on Earth. This rugged, fast-paced expedition takes you into the heart of the Afar region to witness bubbling lava lakes, endless salt pans, and neon-colored hydrothermal fields.
Fly into Mekelle and drive down into the depression using our heavy-duty 4x4 Land Cruisers. Visit Lake Karum, where the crust of the earth is solid white salt. Watch traditional Afar miners extract salt blocks and load them onto endless camel caravans as the sun sets.
Drive to the otherworldly Dallol hydrothermal field. Walk across a bizarre landscape of neon green, yellow, and orange sulfur springs and mineral formations. In the afternoon, begin the journey toward the base of Erta Ale.
Trek up the shield volcano under the stars to witness the mesmerizing glow of Erta Ale’s active lava lake. After descending at dawn, drive back to Mekelle for your return flight to Addis Ababa.
